When shacks were shacks

Perched at the edge of the dunes, these ‘tiny homes’ are perfect examples of ‘small is beautiful’. During the 50’s and 60’s they  formed part of a thriving shack  community. Of course, they vanished long ago – casualties of who knows what….

still they drift across
sun moon in search of
kindly faces

  1. We often went for weekends in shacks like this at Elliston on the Eyre Peninsula. Everything was second hand and the wives were not expected to keep it clean and orderly. It was a holiday from all that. We kids had an unspoken agreement with our parents–for a few shillings (enough for occasional Icy Poles) we kept out of their hair and played all day in the sand-hills and beaches. Everyone was happy.

  2. Yes, Richie, that was it. Thanks for Luke Hopton for these photos — indelibly inscribed on an old bloke’s memory — no better life. And another nice haiku. .
